While many people think of ADHD being a diagnosis of childhood only with a pattern of hyperactivity and disruptive behavior, there are a considerable number of adults with undiagnosed and untreated ADHD. Typically ADHD develops in childhood but may have gone unrecognized or untreated. Adults with ADHD will either undergo psychological testing or be seen by a psychiatric specialist who does screening and diagnostic interviewing. Typical first line medications for ADHD are stimulants and include Ritalin LA, Concerta, Adderall XR, Vyvanse and Mydayis. These medications require in person evaluation and are controlled substances. Other non-stimulant options frequently used with adults include Strattera and off label use of Wellbutrin XL or SR. Neurofeedback is a non-medication treatment for ADHD. Another non-medication option is seeing a therapist who specializes in ADHD. The website below is an excellent resource and overview of adult ADHD. Please contact Mimi Morris, DNP, NP if you wish to discuss diagnosis and treatment of ADHD.
